CHAPTER 25

Listen,” Senator Stern said as he and Jasper Sitwell exited the private meeting room near the Capitol Building. Sitwell had just briefed him on recent developments at S.H.I.E.L.D. “I got to fly home tonight because I got some constituency problem.”

“Any constituent in particular, Mr. Senator?” Sitwell asked with a grin.

“Oh, no, not really. This isn’t the place to talk about it.” Stern fingered Sitwell’s lapel and the small gold Hydra pin on it. “This is a nice pin.”

Sitwell smiled proudly. “Thank you.”

Stern brought him in for a hug. “Hail Hydra,” he whispered into Sitwell’s ear. Then he went off with his entourage to take care of business.

Sitwell got a call and saw ALEXANDER PIERCE on the caller ID. “I need a minute,” he told his S.H.I.E.L.D. team. They weren’t in on the real state of affairs. “Bring the car around.” As they left, he answered the phone. “Yes, sir?”

“Agent Sitwell, how was lunch? I hear the crab cakes here are delicious.”

The voice did not belong to Alexander Pierce. “Who is this?”

“The good-looking guy in the sunglasses—your ten o’clock.” Sitwell looked to his right. “Your other ten o’clock.” Sitwell turned the other direction. “There you go.” Sitwell saw him: A solid-looking African American man in jeans and a leather jacket, raising his glass of tea in a mock toast from the coffeehouse patio across the street.

“What do you want?” Sitwell asked.

“You’re gonna go around the corner to your right. There’s a gray car two spaces down. You and I are gonna take a ride.”

Sitwell smirked. He’d been threatened before. He had no intention of doing whatever this stranger wanted him to do. “And why would I do that?”

“Because that tie looks really expensive, and I’d hate to mess it up.”

Sitwell looked down and saw the bright red dot of a laser sight on his tie, about six inches below the knot. Right over his heart.
